Srinagar

Paradise of Houseboats, Shikaras & Majestic Mughal Gardens — the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, nestled along the Jhelum River.

Srinagar: The Crown of Kashmir

Nestled along the banks of the Jhelum River in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar is renowned for its picturesque houseboats and traditional Shikara rides on the serene Dal and Nigeen Lakes. A dream destination for honeymooners and families alike, this enchanting city offers a uniquely immersive experience.

The city's floating vegetable markets, vibrant lake community, and beautifully crafted houseboats paint a picture unlike anywhere else in India. Visitors can stay on the water while exploring Srinagar's breathtaking Mughal-era gardens, including Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashm-E-Shahi — each more grand than the last.

Adding to its natural splendour, Srinagar is home to Asia's largest Tulip Garden, which bursts into a million colours every spring, drawing visitors from around the world. The Shankaracharya Temple on a hilltop and the revered Hazratbal Shrine on Dal Lake's shores offer spiritual depth to the city's charm.

Srinagar is not just a destination — it is a feeling. The fragrance of saffron in the air, the sound of a shikara's oar on still water, and the sight of snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake make it truly Kashmir's beating heart.

Best Time to Visit Srinagar

Srinagar is a year-round destination — each season reveals a completely different and equally enchanting side of the city.

Spring — March to May Tulip Season

Asia's largest Tulip Garden is in full bloom, the Mughal Gardens are stunning, and the weather is pleasantly mild (10°C–20°C). The most photogenic time of year.

Summer — June to August Peak Season

Perfect weather (15°C–28°C), lotus flowers on Dal Lake, and the busiest and most vibrant time for houseboats and shikara rides. Book early.

Winter — December to February Snow City

Snowfall turns Srinagar into a winter wonderland. Dal Lake may freeze, temperatures drop to −5°C, and the city takes on a magical, quiet charm.

Travel Tips for Srinagar

  • Book houseboats through a trusted operator — The Vanity Journeys can arrange verified, quality-checked options across all budgets.
  • Visit the Tulip Garden in March–April for the most spectacular bloom. It gets very crowded on weekends — go early in the morning.
  • Negotiate shikara fares before boarding. Ask for the J&K Tourism fixed rate card if vendors quote too high.
  • Only postpaid mobile networks work in J&K — BSNL, Airtel, Vi, and Jio. Ensure you have a postpaid SIM before arriving.
  • The Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar) charge a small entry fee. Visit in the late afternoon when the light is golden and crowds thin out.
  • Carry warm clothing even in summer — evenings near the lake and at higher elevation spots can be cool and breezy.
  • Lal Chowk is the commercial hub for shopping. For authentic Pashmina and handicrafts, stick to government-certified stores to avoid fakes.
