Travel Tips for Sonmarg

  • Book ponies for the Thajiwas Glacier trek in advance during peak season (July–August) to avoid long queues.
  • Carry warm layers even in summer — temperatures drop sharply at the glacier and after sunset in the valley.
  • Only postpaid mobile networks work in this region — BSNL, Airtel, Vi, and Jio. Prepaid may not function reliably.
  • Sonmarg is a day trip from Srinagar but staying overnight lets you experience the serene meadows at dawn and dusk.
  • Confirm road conditions before travel — heavy snowfall can close the Srinagar–Sonmarg highway without notice.

  • Trekking permits for some high-altitude routes (Gangabal, Vishansar) need to be arranged via a registered guide or agency.
